Sailcrafter 50
Description
The Sailcrafter 50 is a 50-foot luxury cruising sailboat designed by William H. Tripp Jr. and built by Columbia Yachts as part of their "kit boat" program from 1971 to 1974. This substantial yacht offers spacious accommodations and excellent seakeeping, with a generous sail plan that delivers excellent light-air performance. According to Columbia history found in some owners manuals, Columbia offered yacht "kits" under the name Sailcrafter during the years 1971-1974, with the C-50 apparently being one of the models offered. The design represents Columbia's response to the growing enthusiasm for "building your own boat" among sailing enthusiasts nationwide during the early 1970s. After the initial production run ended, and perhaps as Columbia Yachts got into financial difficulty, they began offering "kit boats" where hulls and decks could be purchased to any stage of completion and finished by smaller yards or amateur builders. This innovative approach allowed serious sailors to acquire a Tripp-designed yacht at reduced cost while customizing the interior and systems to their specific requirements.
