Sailcrafter 39 (Westsail 11.8, Fair Weather 39, Mariner 39)
Description
The Sailcrafter 39 is a 38.67-foot cutter-rigged sailboat designed by renowned naval architect Robert Perry and built by P&M Worldwide/Westsail Corp. in the United States starting in 1979. This model represents Perry's approach to creating a seaworthy offshore cruiser with modern performance characteristics, featuring a fin keel with rudder on skeg configuration that provides excellent tracking and rudder protection for blue-water sailing. Built in fiberglass construction with only 13 units produced during its limited production run, the boat was introduced just as Westsail Inc. was approaching bankruptcy, which explains the extremely limited numbers built. The design emphasizes heavy displacement cruising with exceptional stability characteristics, featuring a ballast-to-displacement ratio of 43.75% that provides outstanding stiffness and excellent righting capability if capsized. Perry's design philosophy focused on creating boats capable of serious offshore passages while maintaining the traditional cutter rig configuration for versatility in heavy weather conditions. The boat is also known by several alternative names including Westsail 11.8, Fair Weather 39, Fair Weather Mariner 39, and Mariner 39, reflecting its complex production history during Westsail's financial difficulties.
