Sailcrafter 27
Description
The Sailcrafter 27 is a 27-foot traditional cruising sailboat designed by Lyle C. Hess and built by Heritage Marine (later Nor'Sea Marine) in the United States starting in 1976. This model represents Hess's philosophy of creating seaworthy, ocean-capable vessels in smaller packages, featuring classic long keel configuration with transom-hung rudder that provides excellent directional stability and self-steering characteristics ideal for offshore passages. Built in solid fiberglass construction with 450 units produced during its production run, the boat emphasizes traditional seamanship values over modern racing-oriented features. The design offers two rig configurations: a tall rig version (34.5' mast height with 376 sq ft sail area) and a shorter rig option (30.5' mast height with 335 sq ft), allowing owners to choose based on their sailing preferences and local conditions. Early models featured variable ballast options with standard (2,500 lbs) and heavy (3,000 lbs) packages, though after 1980 all boats standardized on 3,100 lbs of lead ballast for optimal stability and performance.
