Sabre 426
Description
The Sabre 426 is an American sailboat designed by Jim Taylor as a luxurious performance cruiser, ideal for family coastal cruising, club racing, and occasional offshore passages. Introduced in 2002 by Sabre Yachts in Maine, it was the builder's flagship during the early 2000s fiberglass evolution, emphasizing vacuum-bagged construction for lightweight strength and a modern hull with a wide beam for stability and interior volume. The design features a fiberglass monohull with a fin keel (bulb or wing options) and spade rudder for responsive upwind handling, and a masthead sloop rig for efficient sail trim and strong light-air performance, with a moderate displacement/length ratio for quick acceleration and a high ballast ratio for stiffness in gusts. Production ran until 2010, with approximately 100 units built, targeting affluent sailors seeking a "bulletproof" bluewater companion with classic Maine craftsmanship. Contemporary reviews, such as Cruising World's 2003 test, praised its "sterling performer" qualities with good acceleration, balance, and comfort, noting the symmetrical settees and inviting saloon as highlights.
