Sabre 38CB Sloop
Description
The Sabre 38CB (Centerboard) Sloop is a versatile shoal-draft variant of the acclaimed Sabre 38, designed by Roger Hewson and the Sabre Design Team for Sabre Yachts in Maine, USA. Introduced as part of the Mk I series, this masthead sloop combines racer-cruiser performance with shallow-water accessibility, thanks to its pivoting centerboard (allowing drafts from 4'3" board-up for gunkholing to 8'0" board-down for upwind stability). Built with hand-laid fiberglass hulls, balsa-cored decks, and luxurious teak interiors, it's renowned for seaworthiness, balanced helm, and comfort on coastal or offshore passages. The CB model appeals to East Coast and Bahamian cruisers, offering better maneuverability in thin water than the standard fin-keel version while maintaining a high ballast/displacement ratio (~45%) for stiffness in 25+ knot winds. Production ran from 1981–1987 for Mk I (including CB options) and 1988–1990 for Mk II, with ~70 CB hulls total across both (out of 250+ Sabre 38s). As of January 2026, no new builds exist—Sabre focuses on motor yachts.
