Sabre 30 Targa
Description
The Sabre 30 Targa is a specialized variant of the Sabre 30 Mk III series, produced by Sabre Yachts in Wiscasset, Maine, USA. Introduced as an upscale option within the Mk III lineup (hulls #137–244), it incorporates a signature "Targa" hardtop arch over the cockpit—providing shade, rain protection, and a semi-enclosed feel while preserving open-air sailing (inspired by Targa roadsters). This setup enhances comfort for coastal cruising in variable weather, making it popular for East Coast and Great Lakes sailors. Retaining the Mk III's refined hull (increased LOA, beam, and freeboard over earlier marks for better stability and volume), it's a masthead sloop with a generous sail plan for light-air performance (SA/D ~17) and a high ballast ratio (~38%) for stiffness in 20+ knot winds. Hand-laid fiberglass construction, teak interiors, and skeg-hung rudder ensure seaworthiness and easy handling, with PHRF ratings of 162–174. The Targa was a semi-custom feature, with only a handful built (primarily late 1980s, e.g., 1987–1989 models). Production of the base Sabre 30 ended in 1993, but Targa examples are rare collectibles today.
