Description
The S2 7.9 FX, a rare fractional-rig variant of the popular S2 7.9 one-design racer-cruiser, was introduced by S2 Yachts in the mid-1980s as an evolution of Graham & Schlageter's MORC-optimized design, featuring a taller fractional sloop rig for enhanced upwind performance and planning potential over the standard masthead setup. Built in limited numbers (estimated at under 50 hulls) during the boat's final production years (1981–1986), the FX model retained the core 25.9-foot LOA, lightweight 5,200-pound displacement, and wide-beam planning hull that made the 7.9 a Grand Slam series standout, but with a more powerful sail plan (up to 360 square feet) and improved sheeting angles for competitive PHRF racing (ratings around 168–180). Praised for its exhilarating speed in 10–20 knot winds—reaching 8–12 knots on reaches—while offering basic accommodations for four (V-berth, settees), the FX appealed to serious racers seeking an edge without sacrificing S2's renowned hand-laid fiberglass build quality and balsa-cored deck.
