S2 5.5 Grand Slam
Description
The S2 5.5 Grand Slam (also known as the S2 5.5 or Grand Slam 5.5) is an American sailing dinghy designed by Don Wennersten as a high-performance racer and day sailer, built by S2 Yachts in Holland, Michigan; it was introduced in 1982 and produced only through 1983, with a total of 70 boats constructed as the smallest and only dinghy model in the S2 lineup, part of the Grand Slam performance series emphasizing lightweight, trailerable fun with balsa-cored construction for stiffness. The fiberglass monohull features a fractional sloop rig, large open cockpit for crew of 2-4, pivoting centerboard (trunk-mounted for easy trailering and shallow water access), kick-up rudder on a transom-hung setup, and minimal accommodations focused on daysailing rather than overnighting (no cabin, though some owners add basic storage or camping elements); it offers responsive, exciting handling in a breeze, good upwind performance with its fractional rig allowing easy depowering, and suitability for club racing, one-design fleets (though limited), or casual lake/coastal sailing, with a reputation for solid build quality from S2 despite short production run.
