Ruffian 23
Description
The RUFFIAN 23 is a distinguished 23-foot keelboat designed by Billy Brown in Portaferry, Northern Ireland, in the early 1970s as a Quarter Tonner racing yacht. Over 200 yachts were built during the 1970s and early 1980s by 'Weatherly Yachts', a company established by Billy Brown and his brother 'Dickie', initially in Portaferry, and later in Dublin and then in Baltimore Co. Cork. Billy had designed the boat working at the drawing board in creative bursts around three o'clock in the morning "when I can think most clearly, as at that time the ether isn't cluttered up with other people's ideas". The first boat, Muffin, was completed by May 1973 and showcased at the Belfast Boat Show before launching her successful racing career. With the help of McComb Plastics, boats were built and sold in completed form and staged kits with hull, deck and some internal structures fitted, allowing owners to complete themselves to an agreed specification. The design proved highly successful in Irish Sea conditions, with early boats like Muffin, Bluenose, and Scruff dominating races in their class and competing internationally at events like the Quarter Ton Cup in Weymouth.
