The Bruce Roberts Spray 40 Version C is a heavy-displacement, pilothouse ketch (or cutter variant) designed by Bruce Roberts in the 1970s–1980s, inspired by Joshua Slocum's legendary 1900 circumnavigator Spray, and offered as affordable plans for amateur or professional builders in steel, aluminum, or fiberglass—prioritizing ultimate seaworthiness, shallow-draft versatility with bilge keels, and cozy liveaboard comfort for solo or family bluewater cruising. Version C specifically features a robust multi-chine hull for easy construction, a protected pilothouse for all-weather helm, and flexible sail plans like Chinese lug or gaff rigging for simple handling, accommodating 4–6 in a single spacious cabin with U-galley, saloon settees, and en-suite head—proven in passages from the Atlantic to Pacific, though its ponderous weight makes it more motorsailer than pure sailer.
