Description
The Bruce Roberts Spray 22 in its yawl-rigged variant—designed by Bruce Roberts-Goodson in 1974 as a trailerable pocket cruiser inspired by Joshua Slocum's legendary Spray—is a compact, seaworthy daysailer and weekender prized for its traditional aesthetics, balanced handling, and versatility in shallow waters or coastal hops, with over 800 examples built worldwide, some configured as yawls for enhanced sail balance and reduced weather helm. The yawl setup places the small mizzen mast aft of the rudder post, allowing the main to be fully reefed without losing steering authority, while maintaining the buoyant multi-chine hull's forgiving stability and light-air responsiveness; available in fixed keel or centerboard versions for easy trailering (under 3,500 lb), it supports DIY construction in steel/aluminum (multi-chine), fiberglass (round bilge with C-Flex or foam core), or wood-epoxy, with cozy accommodations for 2–4 berths in a trunk cabin layout, powered by a 4–6 hp outboard, and build costs around $10,000–$15,000.
