Description
The Bruce Roberts Offshore 44, designed by Bruce Roberts-Goodson in the 1980s as part of the popular Offshore series, is a heavy-displacement bluewater ketch renowned for its robust construction, generous load-carrying capacity, and balanced split rig that excels in short-handed heavy-weather sailing, with hundreds built worldwide for circumnavigations and extended voyages. This ketch variant—featuring a shorter main mast and mizzen for reduced weather helm—offers superior stability and sail management over sloop or cutter options, paired with a long or fin keel for directional control; primarily a DIY steel or aluminum build (fiberglass/wood-epoxy available), it provides customizable aft or center cockpit layouts, a voluminous interior for 6–8 berths with full headroom, U-galley, nav station, and ample tankage (e.g., 200+ gal fuel/water), powered by a 33–60 hp diesel auxiliary, with total build costs around $100,000–$200,000.
