Roberts 345
Description
The Bruce Roberts 345, designed in the 1980s by renowned Australian naval architect Bruce Roberts, is a versatile and affordable bluewater cruising sailboat tailored for owner-builders seeking a balance of seaworthiness, spacious accommodations, and ease of handling for coastal or offshore voyages. With a moderate-displacement hull featuring a fin keel (shoal or deep options) and skeg-hung rudder, it offers forgiving performance in varied conditions, drawing from Roberts' philosophy of simple, strong construction using multi-chine or radius-chine methods. Popular for its customizable interiors—typically including a V-berth forward, U-shaped galley, saloon settees, and a large aft cabin with quarter berth—it sleeps 4–6 comfortably under 6'2" headroom, making it ideal for couples or small families on extended cruises. Rigged as a sloop (standard) or ketch for short-handed sailing, the 345 has proven itself in global passages, with hundreds built in steel, aluminum, fiberglass, or wood/epoxy. Its low-aspect rig and heavy ballast provide stability without excessive weather helm, though it favors comfort over speed in light winds.
