Robert Spray 33
Description
The Robert Spray 33 (more commonly known as the Bruce Roberts Spray 33 or Roberts Spray 33) is a popular amateur-built bluewater cruising sailboat based on Joshua Slocum's famous Spray design from the late 19th century. The original Spray was a sturdy, full-keeled gaff-rigged sloop that completed the first documented solo circumnavigation (1895–1898). Bruce Roberts-Goodson, a well-known designer of boat plans for homebuilders, adapted and modernized the concept into the Spray 33 in the 1980s–1990s, scaling it up slightly for better accommodations while preserving the classic heavy-displacement, long-keel characteristics. These are not production boats from a factory; they're sold as plans (via bruceroberts.com) for owner-builders to construct in steel, aluminum, fiberglass, or wood/epoxy. Hundreds have been built worldwide (over 500 Spray variants in the series sailing today), with many completing ocean crossings and even full circumnavigations—proving their seaworthiness despite criticisms of speed.
