Rebel 16
Description
The Rebel 16 is a lightweight, stable fiberglass sailboat designed by Ray Greene with Alvin Youngquist, introduced in 1948 as the first production fiberglass sailboat in America, with over 3,000 units built as of 2025. Featuring a fractional sloop rig with a rotating mast, retractable steel centerboard, kick-up transom-hung rudder, spooned plumb stem, and vertical transom, it’s optimized for one-design racing and recreational day sailing on inland lakes and coastal waters. Its wide beam and rounded hull provide exceptional stability for beginners and families, while its simple construction and portability make it a classic "people's boat." Built initially by Ray Greene & Co. until 1975, production continued under various builders, with Nickels Boat Works maintaining the Mark V series.
