Ranger 33
Description
The Ranger 33 is a timeless fiberglass racer/cruiser sloop designed by Gary Mull and built by Ranger Yachts (a division of Jensen Marine under Bangor Punta) in Costa Mesa, California, from 1969 to 1978. With 464 units produced, it emerged during the West Coast fiberglass boom as a high-performance alternative to more comfort-oriented boats like the Cal 34, blending slippery hull lines with practical features for club racing and coastal cruising. Mull's design prioritized speed and responsiveness—earning PHRF ratings of 150–159—while offering enough interior volume for weekend overnights or family hops. Early models featured tiller steering and a gas Atomic 4 engine; mid-1970s updates included wheel steering, optional diesel power, and warmer teak-trimmed interiors. Tall and short rig options catered to varied conditions, making it a West Coast icon that's still competitive in fleets today, with owners praising its balance of thrill and seaworthiness.
