Ranger 28 Tall Rig
Description
The Ranger 28 is a nimble fiberglass racer/cruiser sloop designed by Gary Mull and built by Ranger Yachts in Costa Mesa, California, from 1974 to 1977. Around 100 units were produced, with later hulls (post-#86) featuring the tall rig option for enhanced light-air performance and sail-carrying power. Drawing from Mull's IOR-inspired ethos, it prioritizes speed and handling over volume, succeeding the Ranger 26 as a compact fleet racer with coastal cruising chops. The tall rig (TM) adds about 2 ft to the mast height, boosting sail area by ~20 sq ft without altering the hull—ideal for variable winds. Owners value its responsive tiller steering, dry ride, and simplicity, making it a perennial favorite in one-design fleets and as an entry-level bluewater starter.
