Ranger 23 Tall Rig

Description

The Ranger 23 is a nimble, trailerable fiberglass racer/cruiser sloop designed by Gary Mull and built by Ranger Yachts in Costa Mesa, California, from 1971 to 1978. With 739–740 units produced, it became a West Coast success story, targeting the IOR Quarter Ton (18 ft rating) class for competitive one-design racing while doubling as a daysailer or weekend coastal hopper. Mull's design emphasizes lightweight speed with a saucer hull for planing potential, making it forgiving and fun for beginners yet capable in fleets (PHRF 219–225). The tall rig variant, introduced in 1974, adds mast height for superior light-air performance and upwind drive without hull changes—ideal for variable breezes. Owners rave about its balance across wind ranges, sporty aesthetics, and ease of trailering (under 4,000 lb loaded), though it's tender in heavy gusts and best for protected waters.
