Ranger 23
Description
The Ranger 23 is a nimble, trailerable fiberglass racer/cruiser sloop designed by Gary Mull and built by Ranger Yachts in Costa Mesa, California, from 1971 to 1978. With 739–740 units produced, it became a West Coast success story, targeting the IOR Quarter Ton (18 ft rating) class for competitive one-design racing while doubling as a daysailer or weekend coastal hopper. Mull's design emphasizes lightweight speed with a saucer hull for planing potential, making it forgiving and fun for beginners yet capable in fleets (PHRF 219–225). The standard rig offers balanced performance across moderate winds, while a taller version (introduced 1974) suits lighter airs—both share the same hull. Owners rave about its balance, sporty aesthetics, and ease of trailering (under 4,000 lb loaded), though it's tender in heavy gusts and best for protected waters.
