Ranger 22
Description
The Ranger 22 is a compact, trailerable fiberglass racer/cruiser sloop designed by Gary Mull and built by Ranger Yachts (under Jensen Marine) in Costa Mesa, California, from 1977 to 1984. Approximately 220 units were produced, establishing it as a popular entry-level performer in the West Coast one-design scene. Conceived as an International Offshore Rule (IOR) Mini Ton class racer, it balances speed and simplicity for club racing or coastal daysailing, with a lightweight hull that planes easily in puffs. The fractional rig and fin keel deliver responsive handling, while its trailerable design (under 3,000 lb) appeals to beginners or fleet sailors. Owners praise its forgiving nature and competitive edge (PHRF ~240), though it's tender in heavy air—best for protected waters rather than offshore.
