Puppeteer 22
Description
The Puppeteer 22 is a distinctive Irish-built pocket cruiser-racer designed by Chris Boyd and constructed by C & S Boyd in Northern Ireland beginning in 1973. This 21.88-foot vessel represents Boyd's philosophy of creating competitive one-design racing platforms that remained sufficiently civilized for weekend coastal cruising. While many small cruisers of this era sacrificed performance for interior volume, the Puppeteer 22 prioritized a slippery hull form and a sophisticated rig, a decision that has ensured its longevity in competitive fleets. Built with fiberglass construction featuring a fin keel with transom-hung rudder configuration and fractional sloop rig, the boat had a limited production run of 33 boats total. By 1984 enough of them had found the sailing and racing waters off Howth to be so congenial to their needs and capabilities that the class has just grown and grown, until nowadays most of the Puppeteer 22s in active existence are with this one class in this one location. The design has become legendary within Irish sailing circles, particularly at Howth Yacht Club where it remains one of the most active and cherished one-design classes.
