POLARIS 43
Description
The Polaris 43 is a 42.67 ft (13.01 m) fiberglass bluewater cruising sailboat, originally commissioned in 1976 from renowned American naval architect Robert H. Perry (based in Seattle) by a client in Guam seeking a design similar to Perry's successful Valiant 40; the boat was first built around 1978–1979, but while intended as a one-off, it entered limited unauthorized production (without Perry's royalties or full approval) by Taiwanese builder Chien Yu, resulting in only about 6 hulls constructed. It features a classic full-keel or modified fin keel underbody for excellent tracking and stability in offshore conditions, a cutter rig (often with self-tacking jib on boom, yankee, and full-batten main for manageable shorthanded sailing), heavy displacement for comfort and load-carrying on long passages, good upwind performance relative to its era, and proven seaworthiness as a world cruiser (with examples documented in Pacific and other oceans). Owners and reviewers praise its solid build, forgiving nature, and Perry-derived lines for serious voyaging, though information remains sparse due to the small production run and "pirate" status.
