Piver 36 Trimaran (AA-36)
Description
The Piver 36 Trimaran (most commonly the AA-36 or Piver AA-36) is a mid-to-large cruising trimaran in Arthur Piver's "Advanced Amateur" (AA) series from the mid-1960s. It represents an evolution in his designs: more sophisticated hull shapes (similar to his professional PI-Series, with rounded central hulls and deep-V amas/floats for better lift, reduced drag, and a comfortable ride) but simplified for amateur or semi-professional builders using plywood/fiberglass construction. This made it accessible for home-builders while offering enhanced performance, payload, and seaworthiness over smaller models like the AA-31 or Mariner 25. The AA-36 was marketed as a capable offshore cruiser, suitable for coastal passages or longer bluewater legs with a minimalist crew (ideal for 2–4 people). It shared the classic Piver emphasis on lightweight, unsinkable builds (foam flotation), demountable beams for trailering/transport (reduced to ~8–10 ft width), and surfing ability in strong winds/downwind conditions.
