Pilot 35

Pilot 35

Description

The Pilot 35 (commonly known as the Hinckley Pilot 35) is a classic American fiberglass auxiliary cruising sailboat designed by the renowned firm Sparkman & Stephens (design #1727, an update to their earlier wooden Pilot designs from the 1940s–1950s). It was built exclusively by Henry R. Hinckley & Co. in Southwest Harbor, Maine, from 1962 to 1975 (with a few later licensed builds in Chile), succeeding about a dozen wooden versions (mostly sloops, one yawl) produced earlier; total fiberglass production reached 117 hulls (including about 25 yawl-rigged variants), making it a sought-after classic with strong resale value and a dedicated owners' association. Key features include a full/long keel for excellent tracking and stability in a seaway, heavy displacement for comfortable motion offshore or coastal, masthead sloop rig (with yawl option), high-quality Hinckley fiberglass construction (solid laminate, teak trim, distinctive cabin windows), spacious interior for 4–6 with traditional layout (V-berth forward, salon berths, galley/nav station), auxiliary diesel (typically Westerbeke 35 hp or similar), and timeless aesthetics that combine Sparkman & Stephens elegance with Hinckley's renowned craftsmanship—ideal for serious cruising rather than high-speed racing, with low capsize risk and solid performance in moderate conditions.
