Picnic 17
Description
The Picnic 17 (also known as Picnic 17 or Lofland Picnic 17) is an American trailerable sailboat/powerboat hybrid designed by Finnish-American naval architect Nils Lucander in 1959, commissioned for entrepreneur Stan Spitzer and initially built by Lofland Sailcraft Inc. in Wichita, Kansas (later associated with General Boats Corp. and other small producers). As one of the earliest recreational sail-power hybrids, it features a lightweight fiberglass hull with a centerboard (trunk) for shallow draft and beaching, fractional sloop rig (with furling jib in some setups), an open or semi-enclosed cockpit suitable for day sailing or family outings, and provisions for mounting an outboard motor up to 40 hp for motoring or even waterskiing tow capability; this dual-purpose design emphasized versatility on lakes, rivers, and protected coastal waters, with good responsiveness under sail (high SA/D ratio) and easy trailering behind a standard car of the era. No large-scale class association exists, but it's a production fiberglass boat (not amateur plans-built), with approximately 350 units built through the early 1960s by various small yards before production tapered off.
