Kelley Peterson 44

Description

The Peterson 44, more commonly known as the Kelly-Peterson 44 (KP44), is a legendary bluewater cruising sailboat designed by renowned naval architect Doug Peterson in 1976. Conceived by yacht broker Jack Kelly to bridge the gap between performance racing and serious offshore voyaging, it was built by Yu Ching Marine (under Jack Kelly Yachts) in Taiwan from 1976 to 1983, with approximately 200 hulls produced—making it one of Peterson's most enduring designs. The standard configuration is a center-cockpit cutter rig, prized for its balanced sail plan, heavy-displacement stability, and "quick and comfy" motion in heavy seas, as noted in Cruising World reviews. An optional ketch rig divides the sail area for easier short-handed handling and better balance under reduced canvas. At 44 feet, it's a go-anywhere cruiser for couples or small families, with a spacious teak-interior layout including a walkthrough aft cabin, U-galley, nav station, V-berth forward, and berths for 6–7. Proven in circumnavigations and Southern Ocean passages.
