Peterson 1/4 Ton
Description
The Peterson 25 1/4 Ton is a pioneering IOR (International Offshore Rule) quarter-tonner sailboat designed by Doug Peterson in 1973, marking his early breakthrough in offshore racing design. Built in limited numbers (approximately 4 hulls initially) by Eichenlaub Boat Co. in the USA, it was conceived for the competitive Quarter Ton Cup class, emphasizing lightweight speed, agile handling, and upwind prowess in a compact 25-foot package. The first boat, El Principio, showcased Peterson's talent for rule-beating hulls with a fin keel and spade rudder for minimal leeway and quick tacks (35–40° apparent). As a pure racer for 3–5 crew, it delivers a hull speed of 6.03 knots and excels in light to moderate winds (SA/D 15.41), though its high capsize screening (1.91) suits coastal racing over extreme offshore. Variants proliferated globally, including the MG 26 (Europe), Seaway 25 (Australia, daggerboard version), Conrad 25/760 (Poland), and later kits by Poseidon Marine or Chita Inc. (Japan).
