Penobscot 13
Description
The Penobscot 13 is a compact, lightweight glued-lapstrake plywood daysailer/rowboat designed by Arch Davis (Arch Davis Design, Maine, USA) as a smaller, quicker-to-build sibling to his popular Penobscot 14. Introduced for beginner-friendly amateur construction (detailed plans, full-size patterns, no lofting required; often used in short WoodenBoat School classes where students can complete one in two weeks), it features traditional aesthetics with five-strake sides, a fine high bow, and a shapely double-ended hull for excellent rowing and sailing performance in protected waters or coastal daysailing. Available rigs include lug, sprit, or gunter (with daggerboard/centerboard for shallow draft), positive flotation for self-rescuing capability, and options for simple sailing setups plus oars. Production is plans- or kit-based (via Arch Davis Design or retailers like Duckworks), with dozens to hundreds of hulls built by home builders and schools (no mass-factory run), remaining available today as an entry-level classic with a reputation for beauty, ease of build (~$1,100–$2,000+ materials without rig), and versatile fun (rowing delightfully, sailing spiritedly).
