Pearson Triton masthead yawl
Description
The Pearson Triton masthead yawl, designed by Carl Alberg and introduced in 1958, is a fiberglass racer-cruiser inspired by traditional Scandinavian Folkboat lines, featuring a spooned raked stem, raised transom, keel-mounted rudder controlled by a tiller, and a fixed long keel with a draft of 3.92 ft (1.19 m). Built primarily by Pearson Yachts in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, until 1967, with additional production by Jouët in France and Aeromarine Plastics in California, it saw over 700 units produced in total across variants, including the yawl configuration, which shares the standard model's length overall of 28.33 ft (8.63 m), waterline length of 21.50 ft (6.55 m), displacement of 6,930 lb (3,143 kg), and ballast of 3,019 lb (1,369 kg). Notable features include a fractional yawl rig, mahogany and teak trim, a Universal Atomic 4 30 hp gasoline engine, sleeping accommodations for four, a galley with a two-burner LPG stove and sink/chart table, a forward head with privacy door, genoa tracks, roller-reefed mainsail, and an anchor locker, making it a durable, family-oriented keelboat inducted into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame in 1995 for its classic design and longevity in early fiberglass construction.
