Pearson Rhodes 41 / Bounty II
Description
The Pearson Rhodes 41, often referred to in its early iterations as the Rhodes Bounty II, is an iconic fiberglass offshore cruising yawl (with some sloop variants) designed by Philip L. Rhodes and built by Pearson Yachts in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, from 1961 to 1967. Approximately 50–66 units were produced, making it a rare classic that ignited the fiberglass revolution in larger sailboats. Originating from the 1956 Bounty II mold—crafted for Coleman Plastics by Aero-Marine in California with heavy scantlings and input from naval architect Bill Garden—the design was acquired by Grumman/Pearson in 1961 after Aero-Marine's closure. Pearson refined it with increased freeboard, lead ballast, an aft-shifted mast, engine relocation behind the companionway, and enhanced wood-trimmed interiors, transforming it into a no-nonsense racer/cruiser. Most examples are yawl-rigged for balanced sail handling on long passages, earning a cult following for seaworthiness among bluewater sailors, though many started as one-design racers before transitioning to cruising.
