Pearson 27 Renegade
Description
The Pearson Renegade is a classic fiberglass racer-cruiser sloop, celebrated for its nimble performance, forgiving handling, and sturdy construction in a compact 27-foot package. Designed as Pearson's first boat with a "split underbody" (fin keel and spade rudder), it balances speed for club racing with practical accommodations for weekend cruising or coastal hops. With a masthead rig and moderate sail plan, it's responsive in light-to-moderate winds but tender in chop—ideal for solo or small crews seeking an affordable, low-maintenance "starter classic" that's easy to trailer or moor. Introduced in 1967 by Pearson Yachts in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, the Renegade was designed by William (Bill) Shaw, drawing from his Sparkman & Stephens roots and influences like Bill Lapworth's Cal boats. Originally named the "Rogue," it was renamed after discovering the trademark conflict. Priced at $7,800, it generated strong demand at the 1967 New York Boat Show (135 orders against a 100-unit goal). Production ran through 1970, with 170-173 units built—many still sailing due to their robust build. It marked Pearson's push into performance-oriented designs amid the 1960s fiberglass boom, paving the way for models like the 26. The Universal Atomic 4 gas engine was standard, though many have been repowered. Pearson ceased operations in 1991, but owner groups preserve its legacy through events and parts sharing.
