Pearson Invicta II (sloop rig)
Description
The Pearson Invicta II (Sloop Rig) is a pioneering fiberglass ocean racer-cruiser designed by William H. "Bill" Tripp for Pearson Yachts, produced from 1964 to 1969 as a masthead sloop with a keel/centerboard hull for versatile draft and responsive handling in both coastal and offshore conditions. Building on the original 1961 Invicta with an extended coach roof for enhanced interior space, it features a generous sail plan (100% foretriangle + main ~567 ft²), skeg-hung rudder for protection, and accommodations for six in a functional layout, powered by a Universal Atomic 4 gasoline engine. Priced around $25,000 new, it exemplified Tripp's tank-tested hull innovations—emphasizing light-air speed and stability—while showcasing Pearson's early mastery of durable hand-laid fiberglass, appealing to racers and cruisers alike. Tripp refined his original Invicta design (which raced in the 1962 Bermuda Race) for the II, incorporating hull tweaks for better righting moment, a flush deck-coach roof integration, and the sloop rig as an alternative to the more popular yawl for those preferring a larger mainsail and simpler setup. Built solely by Pearson Yachts in Portsmouth, Rhode Island (under Grumman ownership), the Invicta II saw limited production of about 12 units total through 1969, with the sloop configuration rarer than the yawl (~8-10 yawls). The sloop Tradewind notably competed in SORC events, contributing to the model's legacy; while the yawl Burgoo stole headlines with its 1964 Bermuda win, the sloop shared the same robust build. Today, these rarities are supported by the Pearson Yachts Owners Portal, with hulls prized for restorations.
