Pearson 365 Ketch Rig

Description

The Pearson 365 Ketch is a robust fiberglass cruising ketch renowned for its seaworthiness, spacious accommodations, and ease of handling in varied conditions. Designed as a bluewater-capable family cruiser, the ketch rig divides the sail plan between a large main mast and a smaller mizzen aft of the rudder, reducing weather helm and simplifying sail management for short-handed crews. With a heavy displacement and high ballast ratio, it offers a stable, comfortable motion ideal for long passages, while the shoal-draft fin keel suits coastal exploration. Introduced in 1976 by Pearson Yachts in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, the Pearson 365 was designed by William H. Shaw as a successor to the popular Pearson 35, emphasizing traditional lines with modern construction for offshore reliability. Production ran through 1982, with approximately 100 units built across sloop and ketch configurations (ketch being the more common for cruising). It was tank-tested for optimal stability and featured optional deep (6.5 ft) or shoal (4.5 ft) keels. The model gained acclaim in publications like The Proper Yacht for its balance of performance and liveaboard comfort, influencing later Pearson designs before the yard's closure in 1991.
