Pearson 36 (tall rig)

Description

The Pearson 36 (Tall Rig) is a masthead sloop variant of the original Pearson 36, a versatile cruiser-racer designed by Bill Shaw and produced from 1972 to 1976 by Pearson Yachts (under Grumman ownership). This tall rig option—available alongside a standard configuration—features a higher-aspect mast (I=50 ft vs. 46 ft) for increased sail area (655 ft² vs. 585 ft²), enhancing light-air performance and upwind drive while maintaining the boat's balanced, IOR-influenced hull with a fin keel, skeg-hung rudder, and moderate beam for seaworthiness. With its solid fiberglass hull, teak-trimmed interior, and dual-purpose layout sleeping six (or seven with a pilot berth), it bridged the gap between family cruising and club racing, earning praise for its solid build and no-compromise adaptability at a base price of around $29,500 in 1975.
