Passport 42
Description
The Passport 42 is a classic heavy-displacement bluewater cutter designed by Canadian naval architect Stan Huntingford (distinct from the Robert Perry-designed Passport models like the 37, 40, and 41) and built by Passport Yachts Inc. (primarily in Taiwan by yards such as Solar Marine/Formosa Boatyard) from 1981 to 1988. It features solid fiberglass construction (often with Airex core above the waterline), a fin keel with skeg-hung rudder for reliable tracking and protection, a cutter rig for versatile sail plans (including staysail for heavy weather), a distinctive canoe stern and pleasing sheer for classic aesthetics, and spacious, high-quality teak interiors (with fore and aft staterooms, large galley, enclosed head, and good headroom/storage for comfortable offshore/liveaboard cruising). The design emphasizes seaworthiness, sea-kindly motion, surprising speed for its weight, and robust build quality suited to ocean passages; production was limited to approximately 50 hulls (some sources note up to 51), now long out of production but with a dedicated owner community praising its balance, comfort, and capability (e.g., examples like hull #47 from 1986 still actively cruised full-time).
