Passagemaker Dinghy
Description
The Passagemaker (often called the Passagemaker Dinghy) is a versatile, multi-purpose small sailboat/rowboat designed by John Harris (chief designer and president of Chesapeake Light Craft, or CLC, in Annapolis, Maryland) and introduced in 2005. Commissioned originally by PassageMaker magazine (focused on large power cruisers) as an elegant tender for big boats, it quickly became popular as a standalone daysailer, rowboat, or outboard-powered skiff due to its graceful Norwegian-style lapstrake pram hull, lightweight plywood/epoxy stitch-and-glue construction (CNC-cut kits for easy amateur building), and excellent performance under oars, sail, or small motor (up to ~2.5–3 hp). Available in standard, take-apart (nesting for storage/trailering), and sailing configurations (gunter sloop or lug rig with daggerboard), it accommodates up to three adults (payload ~650 lb), rows smoothly, sails spiritedly (fast, weatherly, and dry), and handles outboard power steadily; CLC estimates ~100–120 hours build time for a sailing version, with over 500 kits sold since introduction (ongoing availability as kits/plans, no mass production).
