Parker 31
Description
The Parker 31 is a high-performance, trailerable lifting-keel cruiser-racer designed by Tony Castro and built by Parker Yachts (UK) (G.W. Parker & Son, Boston, Lincolnshire, England) from 1987 to 1993. It evolved from Castro's earlier 1981 "Passage Maker 31" design (built by John Baker) but was refined for Parker with enhanced speed, stability, and accommodations, featuring robust GRP (fiberglass) construction, a lifting wing keel (cast iron, often electrically or manually operated for shallow draft and drying out upright), fractional sloop rig, tiller steering, and a spacious interior with over 6 ft headroom, 4–6 berths, galley, enclosed head, and good storage—ideal for fast coastal cruising, club racing, or extended adventures in variable conditions. Praised in reviews (e.g., Yachting Monthly) for being "very fast, unexpectedly stable, and finger light on the tiller," it balances excellent upwind performance, light-air capability, and versatility. Production was limited to approximately 30 hulls (sail numbers 1–30), now long out of production but supported by the active Parker & Seal Sailing Association for owners' resources and events.
