Paper Jet 14
Description
The Paper Jet (commonly known as the Paper Jet 14) is a versatile, high-performance plywood sailing skiff/dinghy designed by Dudley Dix (Dudley Dix Yacht Design) and introduced in 2006. It is built primarily via stitch-and-glue plywood construction (using 4mm plywood sheets for a lightweight hull, often from kits supplied by companies like Nautikit, Duckworks, or Third Coast Composites), featuring a modern performance skiff concept with traditional rigging touches, an open wet deck with open transom for self-draining, a lightweight interlocking ladder-frame structure, and notably three interchangeable rig options to grow with the sailor: Lite (free-standing una rig for beginners), Standard (sloop with jib, standing rigging, and trapeze), and Turbo (extended mast, larger mainsail, bowsprit, and asymmetrical spinnaker for advanced skiff-style performance). Intended mainly as a progressive training boat for teenagers or skilled amateurs (solo or two-up), it excels in speed, handling, and fun while remaining buildable by reasonably skilled home builders; production is plans- or kit-based with no mass-factory run (hundreds of sets sold, but actual hulls in the dozens to low hundreds based on builder reports and launches documented on the designer's site), and it remains available today through plans and kits.
