Palmer Johnson 43
Description
The Palmer Johnson 43 (also known as the PJ-43) is a classic racer-cruiser sailboat that is essentially the US-market version of the Swan 43 (S&S), designed by Sparkman & Stephens (design #1973, by Olin Stephens) and originally built by Nautor in Finland starting in 1967, with Palmer Johnson handling importation, marketing, and some custom detailing/finishing for American buyers in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It features fiberglass construction, a fin keel with skeg-hung rudder (and originally an adjustable trim tab on the keel), a masthead sloop rig, and was conceived as a competitive offshore performer under both RORC and CCA rules, blending excellent racing pedigree with comfortable cruising accommodations (including teak interiors and good sea-keeping qualities); production of the Swan 43 totaled around 67 hulls through the early 1980s, with a portion (roughly one in four early examples) re-badged and sold as Palmer Johnson 43s—now long out of production but highly regarded as a timeless S&S classic.
