Pacific Dolphin 28
Description
The Pacific Dolphin 28 represents a quintessential example of 1970s Southern California fiberglass craftsmanship, designed by Robert Finch and built by Pacific Dolphin Inc. in Oceanside starting in 1975. This boutique-era sailboat emerged from the maritime hub during a golden age of custom boatbuilding, widely recognized by maritime historians as sharing lineage with the Yankee 28 design. Her substantial displacement provides a comfortable, sea-kindly motion, while her generous sail plan delivers excellent light-air performance, making her well-suited for coastal cruising with occasional overnight passages. Finch intended the vessel to bridge the gap between a spirited club racer and a legitimate coastal cruiser, characterized by a high ballast-to-displacement ratio and traditional aesthetic that eschews the voluminous "wedge" shaped hulls of modern production cruisers in favor of a balanced, sea-kindly underwater profile. The boat features fiberglass construction with a fin keel and rudder on skeg configuration, representing the evolution from full-keel designs toward more performance-oriented underbodies
