Osprey

Osprey

Description

The classic Osprey stands as one of Ian Proctor's most celebrated designs and represents a fascinating chapter in Olympic sailing history. Built in 1952 for Olympic trials to select a new, two-handed, high-performance dinghy class, the Osprey was ultimately passed over in favor of the Flying Dutchman. However, this "defeat" tells only part of the story. Osprey No 1, sailed by Ian Proctor, John Oakley and Cliff Norbury, raced in the Coronation Round the Isle of Wight Race the next year and beat 200 other dinghies to take first place. This victory against such a large fleet established the Osprey's racing credentials beyond any doubt. The production Osprey – the Mark II – became available in 1956, with the clinker hull changed to a four-plank plywood hull with broad top and garboard planks and two narrower bilge planks. The two upper planks were overlapped, giving a four-plank clinker appearance.
