Choey Lee Offshore 44 Ketch
Description
The Cheoy Lee Offshore 44 Ketch is a classic bluewater cruising sailboat built by Cheoy Lee Shipyard Ltd. in Hong Kong from 1968 to 1974 (with examples commonly dated in that range). It was designed by Alden & Associates (John G. Alden, the renowned American naval architect known for elegant, seaworthy offshore designs like the Alden 50 and 53); production was limited at 17 hulls (per sailboatdata.com; a rare, semi-custom classic with surviving examples often in good condition and cherished by owners via the Cheoy Lee Association). Special features include its long keel for excellent directional stability, tracking, and protected rudder in heavy seas; heavy-duty fiberglass construction (structural molded GRP hull, deck, and cabin trunk to Lloyd's 100A1 specifications, with lavish Burma teak interior, natural teak exterior trim, cockpit grating, and laid teak decks—maintenance-intensive but iconic); original Sitka spruce spars (aluminum optional); pedestal wheel steering; and masthead ketch rig for balanced, short-handed manageability (easy reefing, versatile sail combinations like jib-and-jigger in blow).
