Offshore 31 Sloop (Cheoy Lee 31 Sloop)
Description
The Cheoy Lee Offshore 31 Sloop (also known as the Cheoy Lee 31 Sloop or Offshore 31 Sloop) is a compact, heavy-displacement cruising sloop designed by Sparkman & Stephens in the late 1960s and built by Cheoy Lee Shipyard in Hong Kong from 1969 to ~1973, with approximately 40–50 hulls produced (fewer than the ketch variant). It is a sloop-rigged version of the iconic Offshore 31 series, sharing the same full long keel, extended counter stern, and fiberglass hull as the ketch but with a single masthead sloop rig for simpler sail handling and slightly better upwind performance. Built on the proven Bermuda 30 hull (itself derived from the Herreshoff 28), it offers seaworthy stability, spacious teak interior, and bluewater capability in a sub-32-foot package—ideal for couples or small families on coastal hops or light ocean passages. The sloop’s cleaner rig reduces windage and maintenance compared to the ketch, while retaining the traditional clipper lines, teak brightwork, and Hong Kong craftsmanship that define Cheoy Lee’s golden era.
