Offshore 31 Ketch (Cheoy Lee 31)

Description

The Cheoy Lee Offshore 31 Ketch is a classic heavy-displacement cruising ketch designed by Sparkman & Stephens in the late 1960s and built by Cheoy Lee Shipyard in Hong Kong from 1969 to the early 1970s, with approximately 40-50 hulls produced. Based on the Bermuda 30 (itself an evolution of the Herreshoff 28), it features an extended counter stern and inboard rudder for enhanced seaworthiness, making it a popular choice for coastal and light offshore cruising by couples or small families. The ketch rig splits sail area for easy shorthanded handling, while the full long keel provides excellent directional stability in following seas. Constructed with solid hand-laid fiberglass hulls and teak accents, it offers a spacious interior for its size (sleeping 4-5) and a reputation for robust Hong Kong craftsmanship, though build quality varies by hull. Ideal for traditionalists seeking a "go-anywhere" pocket cruiser, it's praised for its motion comfort but critiqued for modest upwind performance and high maintenance on teak.
