O'Day 25 Tall Rig

Description

The O'Day 25 Tall Rig is an American-built trailerable sailboat designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates and produced from 1975 to 1984 by O'Day Corp. in Fall River, Massachusetts, as an optional enhanced variant of the standard O'Day 25 emphasizing superior light-air performance and upwind efficiency through its taller masthead sloop rig while retaining shoal-draft versatility for easy trailering and skinny-water exploration, plus compact liveaboard comfort ideal for couples or small families on coastal day sails or short overnights. Constructed from fiberglass with a fixed fin keel and spade rudder for stable handling (4.50-foot draft), it displaces 3,962 pounds with 1,775 pounds of lead ballast, measures 24.83 feet LOA, 21 feet LWL, and 8 feet beam, delivering a hull speed of 6.14 knots and 290 square feet of sail area under its extended Bermuda configuration (I=32 feet, J=10.60 feet, P=26.50 feet, E=9 feet) powered by a standard 15 HP outboard auxiliary (with optional Yanmar diesel inboard) and modest 15-gallon fuel and 20-gallon water capacities. Renowned for its increased sail area/displacement ratio of about 18 enabling quicker acceleration in light winds compared to the standard's 270 square feet, voluminous interior boasting nearly 6 feet of headroom with a V-berth forward, enclosed head with sink, U-shaped galley, convertible dinette, and two quarter berths sleeping four, plus a pop-top cabin for ventilation and a walk-through transom for cockpit access via tiller steering, the O'Day 25 Tall Rig contributed to the model's blockbuster success with over 2,000 total units built, enduring as a budget-friendly, low-maintenance icon for entry-level sailors valuing Hunt's elegant lines, forgiving stability, and surprising livability in a sub-25-foot package over heavy-weather fortitude.
