O'Day 23 - 1
Description
The O'Day 23 Mk I (also known as the O'Day 23-1) is an American-built trailerable sailboat designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates and first produced in 1972 by O'Day Corp. in Fall River, Massachusetts, as an early entry-level racer-cruiser prioritizing shoal-draft versatility for easy trailering and skinny-water access, responsive handling in light to moderate winds, and compact liveaboard accommodations ideal for couples or small families on coastal day sails or brief overnights, featuring an innovative pop-top cabin for adjustable headroom. Constructed from fiberglass with a cast-iron external ballast keel (1,250 pounds) and fiberglass centerboard for agile performance and beaching ease, it displaces 3,085 pounds, measures 22.75 feet LOA, 19.50 feet LWL, 7.92 feet beam, and drafts 2 feet board-up to 5.5 feet board-down, achieving a hull speed of about 6.0 knots and 246 square feet of sail area under a masthead sloop rig powered by a 7.5- to 15-HP outboard auxiliary with minimal fuel capacity. Renowned for its buoyant stability, self-righting qualities from the weighted keel, and cozy interior boasting up to 6'4" headroom with pop-top raised (4'7" lowered) across a V-berth forward, convertible dinette, compact galley, portable head, and quarter berth sleeping up to five, plus tiller steering and a walkthrough transom for cockpit convenience, the O'Day 23 Mk I was produced through 1976 with around 500 units built before being refined as the Mk II with internal lead ballast.
