O'Day 192
Description
The O'Day 192 is an American-built trailerable sailboat designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates and first produced in 1987 by O'Day Corp. in Fall River, Massachusetts, as a compact evolution of the O'Day 19 emphasizing enhanced stability through its wing keel, responsive performance for coastal day sails or club racing, and minimalist overnighting for solo or couples on protected waters with shoal-draft versatility for easy trailering and beaching. Constructed from fiberglass with a stub wing keel and retractable centerboard configuration (including 300 pounds of encapsulated iron ballast), it displaces 1,350 pounds, measures 19.17 feet LOA, 16.33 feet LWL, 7.67 feet beam, and drafts 0.92 feet board-up to 3.83 feet board-down, achieving a hull speed of about 5.7 knots and 175 square feet of sail area under a fractional sloop rig powered by a 4- to 6-HP outboard motor with minimal fuel capacity. Renowned for its buoyant planing hull, PHRF handicap around 210 for competitive speed in light airs despite some tenderness from light displacement, and cozy interior boasting 4'8" headroom with a V-berth forward, convertible dinette, compact galley, portable head, and optional quarter berth sleeping up to four, plus tiller steering and a walkthrough transom for cockpit ease, the O'Day 192 was produced through 1989 with around 200 units built before the yard's closure, enduring as an affordable, low-maintenance classic for novice sailors valuing Hunt's elegant lines, forgiving stability, and hassle-free portability over heavy-weather fortitude or luxury.
