Ocean Winds 33 Catamaran
Description
The Ocean Winds 33 (often called Oceanwind 33 or Ocean Winds 33) is a classic British cruising catamaran built by South Coast Boatyard (or associated yards like those linked to Pat Patterson's designs) in the UK during the late 1970s–early 1980s (examples from ~1979–1980s appear in listings). It was designed by Pat Patterson (an experienced ocean sailor and multihull advocate who circumnavigated in an earlier Ocean Winds 33 prototype via the Magellan Straits), drawing from his own world voyage experiences and influenced by Heavenly Twins-style cats but scaled up for more space and seaworthiness. Production was limited (likely low dozens based on rarity in markets, owner associations like the Heavenly Twins & Cruising Catamaran Association, and historical context; no mass run). It features fiberglass (GRP) construction with twin hulls for stability and shallow draft, a ketch rig (main + mizzen for balanced, easy shorthanded handling in heavy weather), twin engines (often Volvo Penta diesels for reliable motoring), and a spacious, practical interior (multiple cabins with 6–8 berths, galley, heads, and good storage/tankage for liveaboard or extended coastal/offshore cruising). It's renowned for solid steadiness (dependable in bad weather), seaworthiness (proven by circumnavigations), comfortable motion, and versatility (sails reasonably, motors well, easy to maneuver)—often described as a "Heavenly Twins on steroids" with strong owner satisfaction for family cruising and long passages.
