Description
The North Star 727 (also known as the Farr 727) is a lightweight fiberglass racer-cruiser designed by the legendary Bruce Farr and built by North Star Yachts in Canada from 1976 to 1978, with a total of about 30 units produced (part of a broader 40-unit run including New Zealand builds by Alpha Marine). As Farr's early breakout design, its prototype won the International 1/4-Ton Cup in 1975, showcasing innovative fractional sloop rigging and a fin keel with skeg-hung rudder for agile, responsive handling—blending one-design racing prowess with basic cruising amenities. Ideal for club racing or trailerable day/overnight sails, it features a compact cuddy cabin with V-berths for 2-4, a small galley area, and an open cockpit. Powered by a small outboard (typically 4-6 hp), owners praise its speed in breezes, low maintenance, and timeless lines, though its light displacement demands careful reefing in heavy air.
