North Star 48 Sloop
Description
The North Star 48 Sloop is the single-mast variant of the renowned heavy-displacement fiberglass bluewater cruising sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens (design #2280) and built by North Star Yachts Ltd. in Canada from 1970 to 1981 (later under Hughes Boat Works). Fewer than 20 sloop-rigged units were produced alongside the more common yawl, offering a masthead sloop configuration for powerful, straightforward sail handling while retaining the ketch's emphasis on balance and short-handed capability. With a center-cockpit for safety, fin keel with skeg-hung rudder for protected steering and tracking, and robust hand-laid fiberglass (balsa-cored deck), it's celebrated for seaworthiness, spacious teak accommodations (V-berth forward, guest cabin amidships, aft master stateroom, U-shaped galley, large saloon sleeping 6-8, two heads with shower, nav station), and timeless lines. Standard power was a Perkins 4-236 diesel (85 hp).
